Proctor R. Bright, A Well Served Life
Proctor R. Bright’s career spanned from being a shop boy, joining the Army and receiving the Bronze Star in tours in the Philippine and Asiatic-Pacific Campaigns, to owning one of the oldest African-American businesses in South Carolina and a published author.
He was a master mechanic with a dedicated passion for his work. An expert carpenter, he designed and built several houses and his garage. He was an accomplished guitarist/pianist and played regularly for his church, and the local nursing home. He served the office of deacon, and was a choir member.
He was a certified florist, and taught specialized classes in shop mechanics and welding for Jasper High School. He served several terms on the Jasper County Live Oak Hospital and Jasper County Tax Assessor’s Boards. Mr. Bright was a Sunday School teacher for many years and organized several programs in various churches. The community's need also provided an opportunity to serve as a 4-H volunteer leader assisting many functions in Rock Eagle, Georgia, and Clemson, South Carolina. He was honored as Grand Marshall of the Dr. Martin Luther King Day Parade in Ridgeland, South Carolina, his beloved hometown. He was privileged in 2002, to be recognized as his family’s patriarch. As an eloquent elder statesman he had a voice in many crucial issues regarding the people of his city and state. A friend to ecology, he served on the South Carolina Forestry Commission Board.
Mr. Bright was presented, The Order of the Palmetto Patriot, the highest civilian honor awarded by South Carolina Lieutenant Governor Andre Bauer. The award is presented to an individual who has shown outstanding commitment to public service within the state and community. March 29th 2007, was proclaimed as Proctor Bright Day, in Ridgeland, South Carolina, for all time to come. Mr. Bright received the keys to the city. Also in 2007, he co-founded He Whispered a Dream Foundation, Inc. a non-profit organization, designed to place resources and Christian literature with at-risk teens and seniors, our most vulnerable.
In March of 2008, the Jasper County Caring Hands Foundation honored him as the Humanitarian of the Year, and was he selected by the Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina Office on Aging as the recipient of the 2007 Media Award.
Mr. Bright, a humble man remained a loving and kind friend, father, grandfather and great-grandfather until his death. He enjoyed travel, was an avid fisherman, loved story - telling, family gatherings and was an accomplished cook.
